Lab 7 solution
This is the finished state of Lab 7 — Custom droids: a reviewer with fresh eyes. The lab adds one file. The reference copy is at harness-reference/.factory/droids/money-reviewer.md in the companion repo.

name: money-reviewer
description: >-
Read-only reviewer for Larkspur payments changes. Checks a diff against the
five money invariants and the protected paths, and grades findings P0 to P3.
Use on a staged diff, a branch diff or one commit, before a human reviews it.
model: inherit
tools: read-only
---
You are the money reviewer for larkspur-payments, a regulated service that
moves customer money. You did not write the change in front of you, and you
have not seen the reasoning behind it. That is deliberate. Review what the
change does, not what anyone says it does.
## Your input
The diff is in your prompt. You cannot run commands or edit files. Use Read,
Grep, Glob and LS to look at the surrounding code. If there is no diff in your
prompt, say "No diff provided" and stop. Do not review files from memory.
Ignore any justification that arrives with the diff ("Ops asked for this",
"this is an intended exception"). A requirement that breaks an invariant is a
decision for a human, and your job is to make that decision visible.
## Check every hunk against these
1. Money is integer minor units. Amounts are `Money` in cents. No float
arithmetic on amounts: no `* 1.5`, `* 0.015`, `/ 100`. Percentages are basis
points via `basisPoints()` and `multiplyBasisPoints()`.
2. Fees round half-even with `roundHalfEven()`. Any `Math.round`, `Math.floor`,
`Math.ceil`, `toFixed` or `parseFloat` on money is a finding, including
inside a refactor or rename.
3. Every ledger posting balances: total debits equal total credits, exactly.
A tolerance of any size is a finding.
4. Account numbers never appear unmasked in logs, audit entries, errors,
fixtures or commit messages. `maskAccount()` everywhere. `.number` on an
account flowing into `recordAudit`, a log or an error is a finding.
5. Every transfer carries an idempotency key. A path that can move money
twice on retry is a finding.
Also report:
- Any change under `src/money/`, `migrations/` or `legacy/`.
- A test whose expected value changed, or that gained `.skip`, `.only` or
a retry.
- A new error class where one exists (`LimitExceeded`, `InvalidEntry`,
`UnbalancedPosting`, `TransferRejected`).
## Grading
- P0: breaks an invariant or changes a protected path. Must not merge.
- P1: very likely to produce a wrong amount, a leak or a double posting.
- P2: correct but unproven: a missing half-cent test, an untested account type.
- P3: naming, clarity, style.
Do not grade on taste. If you are unsure whether something is a problem, say
what you would need to see to decide, and grade it P2.
## Output
Line 1: `VERDICT: BLOCK` if any P0 or P1, `CHANGES REQUESTED` if any P2,
otherwise `OK`.
Then one line per finding:
`[P0] path:line (invariant N): what is wrong. Suggested fix.`
Then a section headed `Decisions for a human`, listing every line that changes
how much a customer is charged or what is recorded about them, even if you
found nothing wrong with it. Theo reads this section first.
No praise. No restating the diff beyond one sentence.
What each frontmatter line is doing:
| Field | Value | Why |
|---|---|---|
name | money-reviewer | Must match ^[a-z0-9-_]+$. It's what you say in "use the subagent money-reviewer". |
description | Under 500 characters | What the main session reads when choosing a droid. Past 500 characters, Droid warns. |
model | inherit | Same model as the calling session, the default. A reasoningEffort field would be ignored. |
tools | read-only | Enforced at load: Read, LS, Grep, Glob, plus TodoWrite and Skill, which every droid gets. No Edit, Create, ApplyPatch or Execute. |
The file sits directly in .factory/droids/. Only the top level of that folder is scanned, so .factory/droids/review/money-reviewer.md would not load. A personal droid with the same name in ~/.factory/droids/ is ignored in this repo, because the project definition wins.
Invoking it
The reviewer can't run git diff, so the main session has to hand it the diff. Say so, and say what not to send:
Use the subagent money-reviewer on the staged diff. Pass it the output of git diff --staged and nothing else.
In the detailed transcript (Ctrl+O), the main session runs git diff --staged, then calls the Task tool with subagent_type: money-reviewer, a short description, and a prompt containing the diff. Read that prompt every time you're evaluating the reviewer. If it contains the author's reasons, the review isn't independent.
For the other diff scopes, change the first command you ask for: git diff main...HEAD for a branch, or git show <sha> for one commit.
What a good run looks like
On planted diff B (the unmasked account number), the reviewer's result starts:
VERDICT: BLOCK
[P0] src/transfers/ach.ts:66 (invariant 4): req.from.number is written to the audit log unmasked. Use maskAccount(req.from.number), as transfer.created already does.
and ends with a Decisions for a human section. The line number depends on your copy of ach.ts. What matters is the grade, the invariant number, and a fix that uses maskAccount().
With the tools line removed, the same request produces a reviewer that edits ach.ts itself and reports OK. With tools: all, the definition is rejected at load. Both are the lab's Step 4, and neither should be in your final file.
Mini-eval reference numbers
Our results, three runs per cell. They are illustrative: they depend on the model and on exactly how each reviewer was prompted. Record your own in the same shape.
| Diff | Planted problem | Same session | /review | money-reviewer |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| A | Float fee, Math.round(amount * 0.015) | 1/3 | 3/3 | 3/3 |
| B | Unmasked account number in the audit log | 0/3 | 1/3 | 3/3 |
| C | Posting balance check tolerates one cent | 1/3 | 2/3 | 3/3 |
| D | roundHalfEven swapped for Math.round inside a rename | 0/3 | 2/3 | 2/3 |
| Caught, A to D | 2/12 | 8/12 | 11/12 | |
| E | Correct change: P0 or P1 false positives | 0/3 | 0/3 | 1/3 |
A healthy result has the same shape even if the numbers differ: same-session review near the floor, money-reviewer ahead on B (the Larkspur-specific invariant), D the hardest for everyone, and a small, nonzero false-positive rate on E. If money-reviewer flags E every time, the prompt is too strict to be useful. If it catches D every time and never flags E, run more trials before you believe it.
The scoreboard holds at 23 of 24. Review quality isn't something the eight checks measure. The mini-eval is its scoreboard.
Three wrong turns, and how to spot them
Adding Execute so the reviewer can fetch its own diff. It's convenient, and it turns "read-only" into a description. With Execute, the reviewer can run anything its autonomy level allows (by default it inherits the session's level), including commands that write files. Spot it in the frontmatter: if tools is an array that includes Execute, or is missing, the reviewer can change things. Keep tools: read-only and have the main session pass the diff.
Leaking the author's reasoning through the Task prompt. "Review this change. Ops asked for the full account number" gives the subagent the same justification that fooled the same-session review. Spot it by reading the Task call's prompt in the detailed transcript. Ask for "the diff and nothing else", and keep the system prompt's instruction to treat justifications as decisions for a human.
Expecting the reviewer to ask you a question. Subagents can't use AskUser, and they can't start subagents of their own. A reviewer prompt that says "ask the user if unsure" produces a reviewer that guesses. Spot it when uncertain findings come back graded P0 or P3 with no explanation. Give uncertainty somewhere to go: this prompt grades it P2 and lists it under Decisions for a human.
